Ice Ice Baby (a.k.a How to Dress like a Figure Skater)

Who doesn’t want to be a figure skater? Or at the very least, and I mean very least, dress like one?!

In the early 90’s, when I was a child my sincerest wish was to be a figure skater.

I took one skating lesson and I was hooked. Who wouldn’t be? The glitz, the glam, the graceful elegance that emanates from each and every skater. The poise that I, a naturally clumsy person, aspired to have. I remember watching Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski compete in The ’98 Olympics, and I wanted to be just like them.

Now, since I’m writing this post you may or may not be able to tell that my dreams of being a figure skater didn’t pan out. After, pleading endlessly for lessons my mother promptly said, “Laura- I love you, but figure skaters simply get up way too early. I need you to pick a new dream.” Never fear, it worked out for the best seeing as a) there isn’t enough coffee in the southeast to make me into a morning person AND b) while I will always deeply love figure skating, I also really love the outfits.

So the 2018 Olympics are basically over and our hearts are broken. Let’s cope with our Olympic withdrawals by focusing on the positive a.k.a. how to dress like a figure skater!

Classic Olympic Figure Skating Outfit Musts:

-Crush Velvet (Be still my heart.)
-Sequins/ Rhinestones (Something has to catch the light and make them notice you)
-Flippy Skirts (Easier for figure skaters. Translation= Makes your legs longer.)
-Bonus points for rocking a scrunchie!

Things to skip:

-TOO much makeup. (This isn’t the actual Olympics)
-TOO much hairspray. (See reason above. Plus, you want your hair to move with you.)
-Pulling your hair into a tight bun. (Just don’t.)
-Don’t wear a real figure skaters costume. (We’re fun, not delusional.)

This is the face of a badass queen! USA’s Mirai Nagasu competed at Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games. She is the first American to land the Triple Axel at The Olympics and the first since Tonya Harding to land it in an international competition.

**Please read the caption above. This is the face of victory. This was taken right after she completed her freestyle program and landed the Triple Axel.

And now, back to Olympic sized inspiration. Note: All these elements are not intended to be worn all at once. Unless that’s your style. In that case, GET IT!

Step one: Start with the crushed velvet

Try pairing a crushed velvet top with your favorite pair of high waisted jeans OR go all in with a velvet romper and some bling.

The point is to have a hint of velvet without it being all people see. Velvet is such a great texture. To make your look more interesting, try mixing with other fabrics like a leather jacket or go for a little “high low” like crushed velvet strappy top paired with a bomber style jacket.

Step 2: Add Some Sequins

Whether you love sequins or a little goes a long way for your personal style, sequins are all about catching the light. So add -POP- of sequins with a dress for a fun night out or tone the look down by pairing the dress with a little suede or leather jacket. You can’t go wrong. If you really want to have some fun, trade out the skates for your favorite high tops.

Want to add a hint of sequins/rhinestones? Try a great pair of sunglasses or some fun earrings.

Either way, a little sparkle is always a good idea!

Step 3: Top is Off (Nail the landing)

While we all can’t be landing triple axels, you can land the look with the perfect flippy skirt, which just so happens to come in velvet!

Pair your perfect flippy skirt with a great sweater, a graphic tee, or a fun bodysuit. Extra point if you throw on a scrunchie and give the skirt a twirl when you wear this outfit. Because who could resist?!

Remember the most important lesson about dressing like a figure skater is to ensure that a) you have an amazing soundtrack following you wherever you go because you can’t skate without one and b) give it a little attitude. In the words of Mae West, “You only live once, but if you do it right once is enough.”
